The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to uphold democratic principles by ensuring that opposition parties are allowed to thrive if he is elected Nigeria's president in the 2027 general election.
Obi stated that his administration would not use the machinery of government to target political opponents. Instead, he said he would promote a healthy democratic environment where opposition parties could freely contribute to national discourse and collaborate on issues affecting the country.
Speaking during an interview with DW, the former Anambra State governor emphasized that his priority would be to strengthen institutions and ensure that the nation's democratic system functions as it should.
He said:
“The system must work the way it should function, I would never prosecute anybody politically, I would never do anything wrong while in office.
“I would not go after opponent, I would make sure that we have strong opposition parties that can stand and say no. In times of problems I would invite them.
“If I was president with what is happening in the North, I would invite all opposition parties and I would sit with stakeholders in the North to discuss and come up with a solutions.”
Obi's remarks highlights his commitment to inclusive governance, dialogue, and the strengthening of democratic institutions, stressing that national challenges require collective efforts rather than political division.
