Governor Hope Uzodimma has offered fresh insight into his decision not to support a second term for Dr. Macdonald Ebere as Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, a move that observers say subtly points to a possible power shift ahead of the 2028 governorship race.
The Governor spoke on Saturday, April 18, in Owerri during a civic reception held in honour of Dr. Ebere at the end of his tenure as the Imo APC Chairman.
Dr. Ebere, who hails from Owerri Senatorial Zone, has now been succeeded by a party leader from Orlu Zone. The development is widely interpreted as part of a broader political balancing arrangement, especially as Orlu Zone has held the governorship position for nearly 24 years. With this transition, attention is increasingly turning toward Owerri Zone as a likely contender for the state’s top seat, a position that may also be reflected in the strategies of other political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Explaining the leadership change, Uzodimma stated that although Ebere was eligible to continue, “considerations of equity and political stability necessitated leadership changes.”
The Governor also used the occasion to highlight his administration’s development efforts in Owerri, the state capital, while commending Ebere for his role in strengthening the party. He described the former chairman as “one of our best,” noting that the event was both a thanksgiving for a successful tenure and a celebration of Ebere’s new appointment, which he credited to “the goodness of the Lord and the wisdom” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Emphasizing his personal connection to Ebere, Uzodimma remarked, “He is not just my political friend; his wife is my cousin. Our relationship is organic.”
Reaffirming his administration’s urban development agenda, the Governor stressed the importance of a well-developed capital city, saying, “if Owerri looks good, Imo looks good.” He further revealed that the state is implementing a 25-year Development Plan already approved by the House of Assembly.
Uzodimma also warned against illegal land occupation, reiterating government authority over land matters: “Stop taking government land unlawfully. If land is needed, approach the government.”
He called on residents to support ongoing development efforts, underscoring the need for a capital city that reflects the pride and progress of the state.
In his remarks, Dr. Ebere expressed appreciation to Governor Uzodimma, President Tinubu, APC leadership, and the people of Owerri Zone for their support throughout his tenure. He pledged continued loyalty to the party and acknowledged the Governor’s influence in his journey, stating, “without you, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Ebere highlighted the Governor’s role in both his academic and political advancement and thanked him for the guidance that shaped his time in office. He also offered an apology for any grievances that may have arisen during his leadership.
Additionally, he appealed for the reallocation of Area ‘K’ land to the people of Owerri, citing the loss of indigenous lands due to urban expansion. He also used the platform to seek financial assistance for a young boy in need of a kidney transplant.
