News broke on social media yesterday from the Facebook handle of one Chidubem Marvelous, alleging that the Imo State Deputy Governor, Prof. Chinyere Ekomaru, had resigned her position.
As at the time of filing this report, the claim remains unconfirmed, even though in recent times there have been rumours suggesting that the deputy governor may step down.
According to the speculations, such a move could pave the way for Governor Hope Uzodinma to bring in someone considered more politically aligned and less likely to contest the Imo governorship election, thereby creating room for his preferred successor.
It is also believed in some quarters that Governor Uzodinma may be considering a return to the Senate, a development that would ordinarily see the deputy governor take over the affairs of the state.
However, if the rumours are anything to go by, concerns are being raised about allowing Prof. Ekomaru assume full control. Observers point to the influence of her husband, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who is believed to be politically ambitious, having previously contested for the governorship seat in Imo State.
Leaving the deputy governor—and by extension, her husband—in charge of the state after Uzodinma steps aside is seen in some quarters as potentially disruptive to any existing succession plan.

All these, however, remain assumptions, as the social media report is still a rumour until any official announcement is made. Should such a development occur, it could either signal the emergence of a placeholder for a preferred candidate or set the stage for the next substantive governor of Imo State after Uzodinma.
One thing, however, remains a common political observation: no one easily relinquishes power once it is within reach. Even a perceived placeholder, regardless of any prior agreements or undertakings, may choose to assert personal ambition. Human nature, analysts note, makes it possible for such an individual to desire not just a short tenure, but a full term in office.
Some political commentators argue that the current situation might have been avoided if Governor Uzodinma had adopted a path similar to that of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who, after taking over from Celestine Omehia, disregarded the intervening months and aligned Rivers State’s political calendar with that of other states. A similar decision in Imo, they suggest, could have prevented the present uncertainty.

Ultimately, the outcome of the upcoming general elections may weigh heavily on who becomes the next governor of Imo State, regardless of the current permutations and speculations.
